What is Michigan Construction Career Days?

Michigan Construction Career Days (MICCD) is part of a national Construction Career Days (CCD) effort to show young people the incredible range of career opportunities that are available in the construction field at all levels of education and experience. CCD events have been held with great success in 39 states since 2000. With a unique combination of information booths, hands-on activities, and hands-on equipment operation, CCD allows young people to see, experience, and learn more about exciting jobs in various segments of the construction industry.

Why is it Important?

Young people in Michigan and across the country are choosing careers in fields other than construction at an alarming rate. Consider these statistics:

  • Every year the construction industry is short nearly 1 million workers
  • The first wave of baby boomers will start retiring in 2010-2015, which will increase the number of vacant jobs in construction
  • 37% of all jobs in the U.S. are related to construction

To continue to build and maintain the transportation, commercial, and residential infrastructure that is so vital to Michigan's economy, we must begin to attract and prepare the next generation of workers. MICCD is a first step in that direction.

Who is Making it Happen?

MICCD is a cooperative effort among the leaders in construction and workforce development in Michigan. The Michigan CCD advisory board, charged with coordinating all aspects of the event, is headed by Brindley Byrd, Executive Director of the Michigan Construction Career Council, part of Capital Area Michigan Works!, in Lansing, MI and includes representatives from the following organizations:
